WHY JOIN EASTERN STAR?
THE ORDER

The Order of the Eastern Star is the largest fraternal organization in the world whose members are both women and men. It is an organization whose members have high moral standards based on charity, truth and loving kindness. Belonging to the Order gives me an extended family with members in every part of the world who will treat me as family and aid me if I am ever in need of assistance.

MEETINGS AND ACTIVITIES

I will be able to attend functions locally, statewide, and across the country where I will feel safe and welcome. These functions will be in the form of business meetings held once or twice a month, and social activities such as dinners, dances, programs and fund raisers where money is raised for our many charitable activities.

MEMBERSHIP

In New York State membership is open to women 18 years of age and older, as well as Master Masons in good standing with their Lodges. You may be asked to join, but you shouldn't wait to be asked. A candidate or prospective member may take application through Masonic relationship or sponsorship by a member of the Masonic Fraternity, who is also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. A belief in a Supreme Being is also required.

INITIATION

There are five degrees of the Order which are conferred during initiation. The solemn process is an enlightening and interesting experience for the candidate, with no embarrassing moments. The Eastern Star ritual dramatizes its philosophy of the importance of living a moral life. It uses the symbolism of Biblical characters to exemplify the moral quality of character that members should strive to possess.

PROGRAMS

A basic teaching of the Order of the Eastern Star is charity. The tradition of its members helping one another and humankind in general is practiced extensively. Among the programs are Emergency Relief, Social Service, Cheer Fund, Volunteer Service,Educational Assistance (grants to members and children of members), and contributions to Veteran's Hospitals.

ORISKANY

We maintain a campus in Oriskany, N.Y. where we have independent living accommodations, enriched living accommodations and nursing home facilities for our members who are in need of such assistance. There is also a day care facility for the children of the staff members. In July of each year the campus is host to our Annual Pilgrimage and Fair.

YOUTH GROUPS

The Order has several youth groups associated with it that teach young people to be leaders, to live by the Golden Rule, to respect and help others, to speak before gatherings and in general to be good citizens in their journey through life. (Constellation of Junior Stars, Rainbow, and Triangle for girls; and DeMolay for boys).
